Let's break it down.
We lose Morris and Covington - to me that's no big deal. But we lose Batum too, which I don't like. We get PJ Tucker which I don't like. I've never liked him, he's really old. He's short. On offense all he does is sit in the corner and occasionally shoot open three's. He misses an alarming amount of those open threes. The worst part is, he's on the books next year too for 11.5m.
I actually don't like losing KJ Martin. I think with time, he was going to come along and play a nice role for us offensively in the second unit.
I'm not too concerned about losing one first round pick. That comes with the territory. Not concerned about losing two second rounders either. Or the pick swap.
Harden. I'm not too sure. I like it, I think.
At the end of the day though, this is about the playoffs. And that's a very impressive 9 man rotation.
Westbrook, Mann, PG, Kawhi, Zu
Harden, Hyland, Powell, Plumlee
Harden doesn't play defense. At all. He's not in great shape and will take time to get in semi-decent shape. His game is declining. He's a ball hog. But....
He can pass. He can score. If he's truly about winning a championship, as Westbrook, Kawhi and Paul George appear to be at this stage in their careers, you have to do it. Where does he fit in? With Paul George and Kawhi, I don't think he fits in seamlessly with the first unit. With the second unit, frankly, between Bones and Powell, he's not a perfect fit either.
But when the playoffs start, it's about talent. And we have about 75 games to figure it out, which we should. Ty Lue will probably for the most part, have two of the big three on the court at all times, so I'm sure rotations will be staggered and not so clear with a first unit, second unit. It will be interesting to see if Harden can keep up with Westbrook.
At the end of the day though, Harden is still a really good player. We didn't give up much here. We still have Mann. We're a little small, and a little old. But we still have Bones, Zu, Powell and Mann, not to mention Plumlee. You can't pass on this trade. You make this trade for sure. It's on Harden to figure out how to fit in and not play like he's the man all the time. He'll need to adjust and play more off the ball. He has no choice really. And when he does, he's still a great shooter. And a great passer.
I think the player ultimately who'll get more minutes over the course of the season here is Jordan Miller, who I like. Petrusev has played a total of 3 minutes in the NBA and I know nothing about him. He's young, he's tall and he's skinny. Who knows if we'll keep him. We have the spot on the roster, so why not keep him and see what he can do for a bit.
We got better and we're a contender for sure.
