I have some doubts about SGA but if I had to build a team around SGA or Luka, I might go SGA. Luka is amazing, but also appears to be a crappy team player. No matter who they get around him, they lose, and that player then leaves and tends to be better away from the Mavs. And he brings a terrible attitude with him, as over time he's pissing off the refs in this league with his complaining. SGA involves his teammates. "No matter who they get around him, they lose"? Luka made it to the WCF, destroying a heavily favored Phoenix team in game 7 at phoenix. This is much further than SGA's teams ever got and matches as far as the Clippers ever made it.

There is a reason Luka has a growing reputation for "Dude I don't want to play with" and SGA has the opposite reputation. I am being serious when I say I think there is a decent chance Luka demands a trade as early as next season.

I like SGA and think he's more valuable than PG now. But he's nowhere near Luka in value. I don't know if there is anyone in the NBA that is more valuable than Luka, although a few like Jokic are probably equal.

Even most Mavs fans are getting frustrated with him. His defense is bad. His antics with the refs are bad (Sports Illustrated even ran a "Can Mavs Win Despite His Whine" article). He comes into seasons out of shape most seasons. His team chemistry is not good and the best players who have played with him leave and report they're much happier on other teams and clearly were unhappy on the Mavs when they were there Of course he has many upsides, he's still a top player, but the days of "Luka is the best player!" are not what they used to be. He's a great scorer, but the other aspects of his game are just not happening as hoped for, and his negatives are becoming more real and long lasting over time. But hey, don't believe me. Go to some Mavs places, on Facebook or Twitter/X or message boards or podcasts. You will hear the growing frustration of the people who watch him day in and day out.

We've certainly not been spared growling and whining here about Kawhi and PG (Harden hasn't been here long enough — give it time). That's just the nature of 90% of sports fans: reactive, intolerate and impulsively unrealistic.

Here is a comparison between the two for this season. Looking at this, without seeing the names, how sure are you that one is the guy you'd build a team around rather than the other? How is SGA "nowhere near" the level of Luka?

When you're comparing the 2, it kind of comes down to who plays better vs who's the better player. On their best nights, Luka has more ability. He can be more dominant and unstoppable. Shai plays within himself more, which is why his efficiency will be better. You can make the argument for either side. For a worse team, Luka is probably the better wild card since he can do a lot on his own but we've yet to see his style mesh really well with other good/great players.
