What's the alternative? Keep in mind this is a team that doesn't own it's own picks outright until 2030. Don't sign the guys? Then what? Kawhi probably requests a trade because we can't even replace their salary slots with free agents. We could get back a good return for Kawhi, but we'd be in complete blow it up mode and it would be a long one without owning our own picks even if we got a few picks in return. The Suns are in the same position as us too, is this what they should do as well? Currently, we're a team in contention in the West where pretty much anything can happen. We're not title favorites, but we're 1 of the 8 or so teams that can win if things go right. I think in the West any team can win or lose in the 1st round except probably Denver. Alternative is to trade Kawhi for picks and assets and not keep PG and Harden. Then begin the rebuild. If the team loses in the first round (very possible depending on matchup) this might be the best option. Is it better to commit long term to a first round playoff team? I'm not saying this is a first round playoff team, and this is certainly not my preference, but I'm not confident either that this team would beat New Orleans or Phoenix or even the Lakers in the first round. Let's leave your position on PG out of this, why would you not re-sign Harden in this scenario? Even if you want to trade him, he seems available to us at a good price. What on earth is the justification for just letting him walk?

What's the rush to go into a rebuild though? I'm confident Kawhi can still be a top 3-5 player in the playoffs. He has only a few years left at that level. That lines up with when we have our picks available again so wouldn't it make more sense to just rebuild then when we can capitalize on being bad. If we trade Kawhi for picks, he's going to obviously be on a good team so the picks we have to rebuild with are late 1sts. I mean it's Ballmers money, do we really care that much if a couple guys are overpaid a little? While I agree we could potentially lose to the Lakers or Suns in the 1st round (even though NOP has had our number I think we get by them), you can say that for any team in the West imo except Denver and even for them I wouldn't say it's impossible that Phx can upset them. The West is pretty strong top to bottom, there's a chance no one gets a free pass to the 2nd round. We're 5 to 1 to win the championship right now, 3rd best. And not even that much lower than Denver. Boston has the best odds, partially due to less competition in the conference. Suns 18-1, OKC 20-1, Lakers 40-1. It's frustrating to see the team slip a little lately, but we're still positioned better than a lot of teams even though it's never guaranteed. I'd be in no rush to watch college basketball for prospects.

If the Clippers lose in the first round and signal a rebuild, why would Harden want to do that? And lose control over where he goes?

We just do it when we're ready to. And he could get a no-trade clause that only he could waive, allowing him control over where he's traded.
