Well the rub is they can’t re-sign Harden to anything more than the MLE unless they have cap room. So if PG gets a deal done before the end of the season that kinda leaves Harden out in the cold.
... I think...

========= September 26, 2023 When the Sixers acquired Harden from the Brooklyn Nets in February 2022, they also acquired his Bird rights. That’s what allowed them to go over the salary cap to re-sign him last offseason. If the Sixers didn’t have his Bird rights, they would have needed to trim a significant amount of salary to carve out enough cap space to sign him as a free agent. If the Sixers keep Harden past the Feb. 8 trade deadline, that means they’ll head into the 2024 offseason with his Bird rights. Unless they’re willing to re-sign him to the long-term, big-money deal that he attempted to pursue this offseason, he could once again find himself devoid of realistic free-agent options outside of Philly. … If Harden successfully forces a trade—whether to the Clippers or elsewhere—the Sixers will be sending his Bird rights with him to his new team. Much like the Sixers last summer, his new team would then be able to re-sign him this summer even if it’s already over the salary cap. www.libertyballers.com/2023/9/26/23888643/james-harden-trade-sixers-clippers-bird-rights-free-agency-contract-daryl-morey#:~:text=It's%20securing%20the%20bag.,already%20over%20the%20salary%20cap. =========

Great deal for the Clippers! He'll be 35 going on 36 his last year. I was expecting a 5-yr deal which would have put him at 37 going on 38 in his last year. This is a "Let's do 3 years and see how it goes, we can always revisit later."

It's a lot of money but I am happy for the certainty and lack of drama involved.
I assume we will lock up PG and Harden.

I think... Apparently Kawhi signed for 8m under the max. I'm sure that was done intentionally so James and Paul can get their deals too.

Clippers can still trade for a $20M player fairly easily too, without moving a rotation player. And they've got one more first-round pick to trade.

Reading between the lines, I think the max Kawhi could get was something like:
55m 55m 55m 55m
and he signed for:
$52m $50m $50m
This was an essential signing. He's still a max player and probably will be for the next three years. The fact that he signed for a little bit less tells you he's supportive of and believes in the organization. You had to sign Kawhi in order to retain whatever other pieces we want or need to, i.e. Paul George (who's been playing great as an actual forward, not as a point-forward) and Harden. Plus, no drama. Don't underestimate that.

Great news, I was not expecting anything until this summer, so this comes as a nice surprise .

And to think just a couple of months ago there was widespread talk of blowing it up. Regular season matters to everyone and as a fan I love this version of Kawhi.
