There is one player we can cross off our list for next summer. They are expected to extend Butler’s contract.

Jimmy didn't work growing the young guys in MIN. Will he have better results in PHI?
Embiid seems like he can co-exist with him. Fultz is dead man walking.

Saric and Covington are a good get for Minnesota. After what Butler did to them, they were lucky to get anything, let alone 2 quality frontline starters. If they can move Wiggins, they'll be laughing.

They should have tried to dump Wiggins on PHI.

Houston dangled 4 firsts, which are of no use to them the next few years. Did other teams offer better than Covington and Saric? Both guys are under decent contracts for the next few years and I'm not sure many FA's are looking at Minnesota.

I don't like Butler on a max extension next summer. He is good but not that good. We discussed this in different threads on this board. If you max the wrong guys out on your team you condemn yourself to never competing for a championship. Butler is certainly in that category. So good that he is now off the market and the Clippers will not even consider giving him a max deal next summer. Unless somebody on that TWolves team learns how to close games they are not making the playoffs this year.

I think I heard that Embiid didn't start playing basketball until he was a teenager, yet he's as skilled and polished as a guard. That means he's worked very hard to be where he is. As for Fults; holy shit, imagine the Sixers with Tatum right now.

As for Fults; holy shit, imagine the Sixers with Tatum right now. Philly wouldn't have even had the # 3 pick, which they used to trade up to # 1, if the Kings hadn't had weird protections on their picks in 2015.
The Kings gave up 3 draft picks in 2015 to let Philly absorb Carl Landry and Jason Thompson, with Philly's cap space. But the draft picks were protected 11-30 for the Kings. Not 1 - 10.
So when Sacramento won the # 3 pick in the 2017 draft lottery, they had to swap it for Philly's #5, part of the agreement. So Sacramento had to trade their # 3 to for #5. Philly then traded the # 3 for # 1.
If Sacramento had top 3 protections on the 2017 pick, they could have had Tatum.
Sacramento also owes an unprotected pick to Philly in 2019, as a part of the last draft pick owed in that deal.
Sacramento could have just amnestied Carl Landry, instead of making that Philly trade, but they didn't.

And they lose their first game to Orlando of all teams. Simmons with only 5 shot attempts. Maybe this isn't going to work.

I think it'll work pretty well. Embiid and Simmons are much different than Wiggins and Towns. For one they both compete on defense. They are also not going to shrink and be afraid to put Jimmy in his place. Embiid is better than Butler and while Towns is talented he doesn't always play like the best player. He often doesn't actually. But mental toughness is not a problem with Simmons and Embiid, those guys are very confident in themselves. Butler can also be a medium usage guy and still be effective so while it'll be a little sacrifice for all 3 I don't think it'll be a major adjustment.
