It's ok to give a guy like Butler a max contract when you already have a legit #1 banana guy locked up. Philly has that with Embiid. So it will make sense for them to throw all the money they can at Butler.

These days, tons of players are getting max contracts, it's outrageous. If money should reflect player value, there shouldn't be more than 10-12 players in the league getting max, but that's not the barometer. It was only 7-8 years ago that everyone was shocked at Joe Johnson getting $100M 5-yr contract. It would be yawn worthy today.
Most winning teams have at least one, often two or three players whose contribution is indispensable and who get paid a tiny fraction of their max player's salary. In terms of pure value, the Montrezl Harrells and Lou Williams of the world are worth much more of their pay as compared to a Chris Paul or a Blake Griffin. Teams from around the league should have a good look at what the Clippers have done with more even salary distribution. In any given year, there aren't 30 Lebrons or MJs or Bill Russels or Magic Johnsons. Yet, virtually every team has at least one Max Player. Sucks for all the talent that is comparatively underpaid.

They will lose all kinds of options to sign players in the future. This is how you sink a franchise.

Andrew Wiggins is the poster boy for why you should not give max contracts to second tier players. But they needed to sign him in order to keep Towns. Like CP3 was given the max to keep Harden happy. It is ridiculous. Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, James Harden, Anthony Davis worth far more than the Jimmy Butlers in the league. And the pay should reflect that.
I said last year that DeAndre Jordan would not get a max offer when he became a free agent and he didn't. And that we should not pay him more than 20 million and we didn't. Now it seems centers are not worth much. This summer Mark Gasol, Vucevic, and DeAndre Jordan will all be available. We should cut Boban and Gortat loose and grab one of them at a reduced price. Maybe 16 million a year or something. Centers like Boban and Gortat are not worth much anymore because they can't defend the perimeter or spread the floor by shooting three pointers. Everybody wants Jaren Jackson Jr. or Jason Tatum types as their bigs now.

There appear to be a number of people here who think the 6-12 should also not get max contracts. They really seem to think it's only the top 5. And even some of the top 5 seem questionable in their minds if their age is too high. It's a bizarre shift in thinking. As the CBA allowed for more max contracts, some fans have become even more averse to them.

Of course because you are then stuck with a decent but not top player for many years who is being overpaid and no other team wants that contract in a trade. You have limited your options. Then it makes it hard to sign multiple higher end mid-level players like Harrell because you tied up so much space. Harris is a great example. If he demands a max contract the Clippers should let him walk.

Harrell got two years for six million a year. Reason nobody else was bidding on him last summer was because most teams had all their cap space tied up with these bad contracts. I think it is an advantage to have a lot of good players on moderate contracts than it is to have three players getting near max deals. www.espn.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=401070977Now for example look at this game. A bunch of high paid Rockets players with basically no bench. Sure Harden, Gordon, and Capela get you 97 points and they are all highly paid. But the bench only gave you five points in 34 minutes. And of course one of your max players, CP3, needs to be sat out to rest. And the Rockets are 9 - 10. So sure they almost won a ring last year but I don't think they get close to that this year. I don't think they have a good enough bench because they gave all the money to Harden, CP3, Gordon, and Capela. Could have got five good players, including Harrell back and Ariza, for what they gave to CP3. Now watch the Rockets go on a 10 game winning streak and make me look like a complete idiot.

It would be awesome for the Clippers to contend with a team built like this. These mid size contracts are supposed to be the worst in the NBA and you can see why when a guy like Gallo has the year he had last year. But Tobias, Harrell and WIlliams are such bargains that it is working out for us. Of course if we keep winning with them producing like this Tobias and Trez are going to get big raises. We also have Shai far outproducing his rookie deal and he will be for 4 years. If we could lock up another max guy before we have to start paying out big that would make us really strong.
How high would you guys go on Harris? He's leading the league in eFG, I mean 25m per year would be great but he might be closer to 30m if this keeps up. I also wouldn't use our cap space on another Center. Harrell can play C against most teams and should be our Draymond type guy. We can bring in a Center to soak up 20 min a game to preserve him from banging too much, but I don't think we need one of the top guys. Just someone competent who we can mix in and even have Boban for other matchups.

I don't think the Clippers should pay him 30m even if other teams are willing to. A gallo type deal would be worth it.

Last summer, the Clippers offered him 4 years for 80 million and he turned it down. Agree that he is a third banana even on this team. Lou, Harrell, and even Gallo have done better in the fourth quarter. He is mainly a first quarter scorer but that could change with his improved shooting this season.

I don't pay much attention to this 4th quarter business, a good player is a good player. Maybe some fold under pressure, sometimes I suppose, but you don't suddenly become a better shooter in the 4th quarter. You don't suddenly acquire scoring skills that magically materialize in the 4th quarter. Who ends up with the ball in their hand has much more to do with it.
The jury is out on Tobias in three areas: 1) Defense, not exactly a threatening presence 2) he has not yet been the focus of opponents the way he will be going forward, let's see how he handles the pressure and 3) it's only been 19 games, let's see if he keeps it up.

It's the very fucking definition of a top player who every team wants! There are 30 teams in the NBA. They all want 1-2 top players. It's very safe to say the top 12 are top players who are in demand!

It depends on how the rest of the roster is structured. For instance we currently have no max players and we are doing pretty good.

Max contract discussion on a Milos wants out thread? Sorry I'm late to the party.
My theory on max contracts is you get the most bang-for-buck when the player is 23-26. During the 27-32 years, the player better be a top 10, carry the franchise, last second shot kind of guy to warrant $35-40MM/season. Under no circumstances should anyone over 32 get the full max. $50-60MM total payout over 2-3 years should be the most.
Right now, CP and John Wall are the worst contracts.
