Because we had assets that also included capspace, Tobias, good weather, and even Avery. ____ Well, I don't know about Avery Bradley as an asset. He's a below average player who has just been easily replaced. But here's what we do have. a) We are in LA - but we've been in LA for over 30 years. That's not the main point. The main point is.... b) We have an owner who is viewed as the polar opposite of Donald Sterling. He's ungodly wealthy compared to his peers. He's willing to spend whatever he can within the rules to build a great team. He's passionate about his team. He cares. He's classy. And we have capspace. The loss of Tobias, in my opinion hurts. At some point, capspace has to become a player. At some point a draft pick does too. Those FA's better be great players. Sure it's fairly obvious that the FO is gambling that the capspace and picks will turn into better players than Blake and Tobias. Is it guaranteed? Absolutely not. But it's a calculated gamble that most agree is worth it because we were barely a playoff team with those former players.

Tobias was a pretty tricky asset, he has become a very good player but the second he signs his max deal I'm not sure if he becomes an asset or a liability. He's an asset to a team who thinks they're one piece away and can go over the cap for him, but if he's one of the max guys you have to build around it's not going to be enough.
As for what cap space and picks can get you, it can actually get you quite a bit. Most of the star players traded over the last few years haven't taken monster offers and a lot of them at the time looked like downright paltry returns. With how the league works these days with shorter deals and players forcing their way off teams there will always be trades to be had for good 2nd banana type guys so if we do land 2 max guys I think they can feel pretty confident we can turn what we have left into some pretty good help.

Also Clippers plan is apparently to try and make the playoffs.
"According to Trezz two days ago on the jump, him and Lou asked the front office which direction the team was heading after the Tobias trade. Both sides had mutual interests about remaining competitive and making the playoffs."

I’m sure the players answered the tanking question in their 3 games since the trades, despite the goose egg laid in Minnesota.

Don't get your hopes up. Kawhi forced a trade from SAS because he wanted to join the Lakers, ending up in TOR. Paul George forced a trade from IND because he wanted to join the Lakers, ending up in OKC. AD tried to force a trade from NOP to join the Lakers, ending up in NOP but he has another year.
Each of these guys went out with a preponderance of rumors that they wanted to go to LAL.
Nobody is pushing to end up on the Clippers. The Clippers are Plan B or C.
The best hope for the Clippers is that none of these guys may want to play with the ball-dominant, team-dominant Lebron. Or that they play a similar position. And that they like good weather. Frank and Co. will have to maneuver two guys to come together, and they had better be complimentary players, like, say, Kyrie and Kawhi, Kyrie and AD.

Kawai, AD, Durant are the three they are focusing on, hoping to get at least one.

Kawhi has already said he didn’t want to play with Lebron and has indicated Clips as a preferred destination. Yes. When he had his falling out with SAS his preferred destination was LAL. BLL (Before Lebron Lakerdom). Lebron and Kawhi basically play the same position, lead forward. Kawhi is better off being teamed with a great facilitator at guard, while Lebron is a lead facilitator and is better off being teamed with good shooters at guard. If we get Kawhi we need to have a strong defensive/rebounder at another big position PF or C, and a really good PG that lets Kawhi play off the ball while there is a pick and roll threat inside. We'd have to acquire those. Although Trez and Kawhi and Lou together would be something to see. We should talk Jeff Teague into passing on his option and coming to play here with Kawhi.
