I wonder how they convince these guys to come over play with an empty toybox. They're going to want to play with a first class backcourt. They're used to that and it doesn't grow on trees. The Knicks have the same problem, along with a track record of failure.

Yes, Gilgeous-Alexander and Jerome Robinson are not exactly Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. But they may be closer to Kyle Lowry and Danny Green. Or Tony Parker and Danny Green. Not sure if Kawhi wants a warm weather city or not. After living in California and Texas my guess would be yes he does. Durant I am not even sure he will be in play this summer.

The Knicks have the same problem, along with a track record of failure. We are going to have 9-10 guys under contract and most of them will be under 25 years old, plus Lou and Gallo who are both good players. I don't know if I would necessarily consider that an "empty toybox". Lebron left the Cavs last year to come play with a Laker team that didn't have much either.

I have a feeling Shamet will be better than either of them. Shai and Shamet will be nice and we still have the best reserve guard in the league. We hopefully wii also retain Bev. We have a solid backcourt.

Shai and Jerome are zeros when it comes to being players that would attract talent wanting to compete for a title. So are Shamet and most of the rest of the roster. They are nothing at all when compared to Danny Green, Kyle Lowry, Steph and Klay, etc. Lou Williams and Montrezl have credibility. Beverley is credible. Gallo is half-credible because he's injured half the time. Everybody likes a great shooter, but what is needed are players that can do battle in the post season and survive. Credible backcourts have guys named James, Kyrie, Jrue, Russell, Damien, Darren, Mike, Kemba, Victor, Rajon... we don't have anything like that and we aren't going to compete in the playoffs without top guards to go along with at least one top forward.
What we have are a some mid level decent players and a lot of prospects and draft picks. We have a strong bench. We have one or two guys who could start on a good team.
So what we will be telling FAs is that we will sign two allstars with our cap space, and use our picks and young prospects as trade pieces to try and get at least one serious guard and some other strong supporting talent on the team. They'll see that we have to cap space and the picks, which is good, and they'll be told to trust in Jerry and Lawrence and Doc and Steve Ballmer to get it done. It's a good sell. Not as good as going to a team that already has talent, but its a credible story.
As an allstar, you're putting a lot of faith in joining an almost empty shell of a team and trusting that the team will get it done. You may wait and see what they can pull together before agreeing to sign. You may collude with other stars and try to build a superteam. I doubt anyone else will pull a Lebron and join a team hoping they can trade everyone for AD.
It could all work, or the team could come out of the summer empty-handed. There are only a few superstar FAs, and a lot of teams that want them.

Why do you think the Clippers were on the short list of desirable teams for Butler, Porzingis and Davis when they requested trades? Isn't that a good sign for our free agent prospects?

Because we had assets that also included capspace, Tobias, good weather, and even Avery.
I'm not saying the Clippers don't have some desirability to free agents. I'm saying that when it comes to superstars wanting to compete for a title, the Clippers team is almost completely rebuilding and that has to be considered as a pretty big risk factor.

I'm kinda pulling for Irving. Leonard and Irving would be amazing. If we could also pull off an AD trade, that would be a dream come true.

I think it’s Kawhi, KD and either AD via trade, Boogie or Vucevic.

AD would be an awesome get. Although I can't believe it will cost 5 young players and 4 draft picks or whatever the Lakers offered.

Magic Johnson mad that the Pelicans were just screwing with him for two weeks and never intended to make any counter offers. But the way Kuzma looked yesterday maybe they should have taken one of the deals. And Ingram did not look bad either. Kuzma, Ingram, Zubac, Ball, plus two number one picks would have been about as good as they could have gotten this summer. They must just hate the Lakers.

The Lakers will offer the same this summer but they will also be able to choose from many other offers including maybe the #1 pick. So it was a smart move for them to wait.

Because we had assets that also included capspace, Tobias, good weather, and even Avery. ____ Well, I don't know about Avery Bradley as an asset. He's a below average player who has just been easily replaced. But here's what we do have. a) We are in LA - but we've been in LA for over 30 years. That's not the main point. The main point is.... b) We have an owner who is viewed as the polar opposite of Donald Sterling. He's ungodly wealthy compared to his peers. He's willing to spend whatever he can within the rules to build a great team. He's passionate about his team. He cares. He's classy.
And we have capspace. The loss of Tobias, in my opinion hurts.
At some point, capspace has to become a player. At some point a draft pick does too. Those FA's better be great players.
