I said it many times last year: I found the games so frustrating. Always coming out in the first quarter chucking up lazy shots off the dribble, down by 8 within the first five minutes of the game. No ball movement as the team watched Paul George do his thang.
But this team is fun. Real actual defense, not fake good defense. Derrick Jones Jr was a great pickup. Great defensive player. Dunn's a great defensive player. Zu we know. This team hustles and plays like a team.
I said Zu needed to be incorporated more into the offense and that if he got 35 minutes a game he'd be a 20 and 10 player (Mistwell responded that I didn't know what I was talking about and I'd 'Lost my touch'.) Zu has been absolutely great. Paul George no longer steals three rebounds a game from Zu - instead Zu gets the rebound and Derrick Jones Jr flies down the court. I'll take Derrick Jones Jr. over PG, any day. Harden's been really good. Is there ever a close game where Powell doesn't hit a clutch three (or four of them)? As Powell said when we lost Paul George: 'Addition by subtraction.' You'd better believe it. Our team for the last five years has been built around Paul George. It's great to have moved on.
I'm not worried about Kevin Porter, Jr., he'll be fine and will contribute. I like Kai Jones. I do not want to see Mo Bamba take the backup five minutes (I don't like 7 footers who chuck up threes).
I'd like to see Jordan Miller get in the rotation. And the way Terrance Mann is playing, it might come in his place if he's traded.
It's like we're the opposite of last year. We are the team getting team offensive rebounds and second chance opportunities. We are the team playing hard defense, moving the ball, getting steals, forcing turnovers and getting easy buckets.
My one criticism this year: At the end of regulation in the game against Phoenix when we need a score to win, Harden drove and four defensive players converged on him. Why wasn't Zu or Kai Jones in? Why not have the option of lobbing for a game winning dunk at that point?
But that's a minor quibble. This team plays hard and is plucky.
