The second-year big man showed some promise with the Lakers, averaging 11.7 points and 6.1 boards per contest in 22 appearances following his first start of the season on Dec. 21.
But the team dealt Zubac and Michael Beasley to the Clippers for Mike Muscala in order to clear a roster spot. The Clippers never even called to inquire about Zubac and gladly accepted the Lakers' offer, sources told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.
Following the deal, Clippers consultant Jerry West shared a hearty laugh at the expense of his former club with some old friends during dinner, sources told McMenamin. West spent more than four decades with the Lakers as a player, coach, and executive.www.thescore.com/nba/news/1709173/report-west-laughed-after-lakers-traded-zubac-to-clippers

I really hope this gets plastered all over ESPN/FS1 next week. I'll have extra popcorn ready in case I spill some laughing.

Supposedly, the Lakers made the trade to move Beasley who we just cut after we got him with Zubac. Lakers are nice trying to find a new home for Beasley instead of just cutting him like they should have. They wanted to clear a roster spot for DeAndre Jordan or Carmelo Anthony neither one of whom they got. A stupid move on Magic's part since Muscala has done nothing for them and now is riding the bench.

I still don't understand why the Lakers did this. It is baffling, especially when you consider they gave him to the Clippers of all teams.

There have been all kinds of rumors about this trade. One was that McGee didn't like Zubac taking his minutes and there was beef. Lakers really fucked this up.

Brad Turner of the L.A. Times:
“The Lakers kept thinking to themselves ‘We won’t be able to afford Zubac this summer. That can’t happen.’ And, the biggest key out of it all is that they wanted Michael Beasley gone. He had to be moved on.
Some of it was because of the interaction he had with Luke Walton after the Golden State game when he spoke out about what was going on and guys being selfish. He felt singled out.
So, based on that, the Lakers knew going forward if they’re going to keep all this salary cap space, then we can’t afford to keep Zu. They loved Zubac, they wanted to keep him around but they couldn’t afford to keep him on the team this summer.
Also, a small thing was, JaVale McGee started feeling some kind of way about not playing as much, about not starting…You have to weigh all those things.”

If they were willing to pay Zubac, they could have just cut Beasley themselves. It's still dumb though because they could've cut Beasley and kept Zubac as a trade chip for this summer. Who cares about McGee's feelings?

If they cut Beasley, they still have his salary to pay, and maybe later a cap hold. Instead the Clips cut him and are paying his salary while he plays in China or something. Still, they could have kept Zubac and dealt him this summer, give him a QO or matched a reasonable RFA offer. He isn't expensive until he becomes expensive. I don't think anybody thought this was a smart trade for the Lakers.

If they wanted to get rid of Beasley to free up roster space, they could have just cut him like we did. None of this makes sense, unless they thought Muscala was really going to help them.

West just agreed to a contract extension with the Clippers to remain as a consultant.
