Clippers + 12.5. What can you say. Our 10 day campaign to recruit Durant or Thompson started a couple of days ago when we clinched eighth place. They get to study us, compete against us, and figure out how we play the game. And at the end of the series they either like it or they don't. Then when the free agency hits at 9:00 PM on July first they are interested or they are not and we move on to the next guy in line. So this series has value to us as far as the potential Golden State free agents.
As far as the actual series it is a total mismatch. They have five current or recent All Stars starting for them. We have two rookies and a center who is raw and just starting to learn how to play in the NBA. We don't even have a small forward as a starter. We have a shooting guard (Shamet) who is playing that position. Plus, the Warriors have former DPOY Draymond Green. Who they no doubt will put on our best offensive threats (Gallinari). Green may not stop his shots but he sure as hell will keep him from driving to the basket and getting layups and offensive boards. And if Gallo isn't carrying the offense I am not sure who can. Plus, Klay on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Another smothering defender to shut down what Shai has been able to do in the last month on offense. Then there is Durant on Shamet. Not good for us either. Curry and Cousins are their two weakest defenders and Beverley and Zubac really have to exploit those matchups or we will get blown out before the first quarter is over.
Reserves have been our strength all year. See if it translates to going up against an elite defensive team. Suspect they will concentrate on stopping Lou by trapping him with two guys. That happens and other guys are going to need to step up. That means a lot of Harrell. But they will counter Harrell by putting Bogut on him to protect the paint and prevent him from getting easy dunks. And it probably will work.
So yes this is like a 16 seed going against a number one seed in the NCAA. Except for the fact that it is seven games instead of one game. If it were one game we might have a chance of winning. Do not see it happening in a seven game series. But it will show we are an organized team with young talent and willing to compete against the best. So good for us. The sacrificial lamb needs to kick back in these games and show some heart in losing.
