I have until December 31, 2019 to buy 2 free movies on Google Play. The promotion is only for movies that have a 4K format.
What movies should I buy? I want something shot in 4K, if possible.

Why buy a movie, even when it is free?
If you have to have a movie library, the first 5 movies in any library should be:
1. The Godfather-classic 2. The Matrix-groundbreaking 3. The Silence of the Lambs-incredible performance by Anthony Hopkins 4. Love Actually-best of the rom-coms 5. The Shining-Kubrick and Jack Nicholson
For bonus, I would pick a movie by Tarantino and Christopher Nolan. They are the best working directors today.

Well, I want to "buy" the movie, because it's free. It has to be available in 4K format, for the promotion.
From your list:
* In 2009, I watched all 3 Godfathers. I'd watch them again, so getting them is a good idea. I see they're not available in 4K, only HD.
* I don't want to watch the Matrix again.
* I might watch Silence Of The Lambs again. I've seen that one, Red Dragon, and Manhunter. Darn it, HD only.
* Never seen Love Actually, it's HD only. I'll add it to my Tivo wishlist to record.
* I'd watch The Shining again. HD only. Sigh.
There are a few Christopher Nolan movies that are 4K.
My favorites that I've seen are "The Prestige" and "Insomnia". They aren't 4K though.
The Batman movies are 4K, but I think I'd rather try something else for my promotion.
"Inception" is available in 4K, and is a maybe.
Ok, it looks like only certain 4K movies are eligible.
Here's the list:
What would you pick from here?
I liked Trainspotting, so Trainspotting 2 would be something I'd pick.
I haven't seen most of these other movies. Only "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk", and "Moneyball".

Not a big selection. Baby Driver was pretty good. Taxi Driver is a classic. "You talking to me?"

Thanks.
Right now I'm leaning towards Baby Driver and Trainspotting 2.
(I won't buy both right away, but at least want to narrow down my choices).
Yeah, I saw Taxi Driver a few years ago.

Ok, here's a list of all recommendations I've received, including 3 from RonRay34 (those from the ESPN days may remember him):
* Baby Driver * Elysium * Chappie * The Shallows * Inferno.

Not a big selection. Baby Driver was pretty good. Taxi Driver is a classic. "You talking to me?" I watched "Baby Driver".
After the first sequence, I thought it was going to be a predictable movie where each next heist would be more unbelievable than the next, and involve even more insane driving skills.
But the movie was more than that. There was some good character development for for Baby. Also, showing his background with his Mom.
This was a good fun movie with better character development than usual for an action movie.
The 4K HDR was nice, but I still think the difference between SD to HD is far bigger than something like HD to 4K HDR. That only enhances it a little.
So thanks @clippersisyphus for another good recommendation. I think Blazing Saddles; Baby Driver were your other great recommendations.
You might have also been the one to recommend Amelie, or it might have been dyce or @mannycoon. It was on the old boards.
This was worth a "free" purchase. I rarely re-watch movies now, but I could re-watch this.

Late response. The 2nd movie I picked was "Concussion". I watched it in December. In some ways, I thought this movie was even better for HDR, because of the medical imaging scenes.
Part of the reason for the late response, is I was having an issue when watching it. There was artifacting while watching it, on my 4K TV.
I tried it on my 4K computer monitor, it looks fine. I suspect the web version of Google Play is downscaling it to 480p, because when I open the web player, 480p seems to be the highest quality I can select.
I'm going to post on my TV's forum, to see if there's any suggestions with the settings. I tried different things, but it barely made a difference.

I think "The Shallows" and "Life" would benefit the most from being in 4k. The rest are probably fine in regular high definition. I have seen most of these movies and most of them I would not want to see again. So buying or renting does not make a heck of a lot of difference.

I rolled back my version of Google Play Movies on my TV, to the factory version. That solved 99% of the issue, I still see a tiny bit on one frame of "Baby Driver", but don't see any on the scene I've been testing with, in Concussion. So it looks like a different version of Google Play Movies on my TV made a difference.
