If the NHL could figure it out, then the NBA ought to be able to. What are scores at NHL All-Star games? I remember one year, each team scored 7+ goals. That game was criticized.

How to fix the All-Star game in my opinion:
24 All-Star players Round 1: 4 games of 3-on-3 E v W; No money involved yet other than the existing rules for all-stars Round 2: 6 games of 1-on-1 (not E v W from here on out); Additional money for making it to this round Round 3: 3 games of 1-on-1; Additional money for making it to this round Round 4: Two lowest-scoring players from prior round play each other and high scorer gets a bi; Additional money for making it to this round Round 5: Winner of Round 4 vs High Scorer from Round 3 (who took the bi) play; Additional money for making it to this round and additional money for winner.
Space the games out over the All-star break with the final round on the final day.

The only way to fix the All Star Game is to have the players give a shit.

That's pretty good.
What do you think about USA vs. non USA players? That might be hard to fill in 12 players in each category though, in a given year.
With USA being defined as being born in the USA.
How long does each 1 on 1 game last? Or 3 on 3? 12 minutes?

What the NHL does is use 3 on 3 format. (As in OT, which is one of the best parts of the game.). They have four teams. So 1 vs. 2 and 2 vs. 3. Each plays a 20 min. period. The winners then play a 20 min. period (all 3 on 3). It's a brilliant idea; and no sports commentator I've heard lamenting the NBA or NFL version seems aware of what the NHL does. (Even though it's their damn job to know.). Of course it's not as physical as a 5on5 reg. season game. B ut then, OT itself is not that physical; you can't be looking for the big hit when if you miss, your target is half-way down the ice completely unimpeded.

Re: The idea of fixing the game by providing monetary incentives is obscene. These are all-star players and as such, they all make a ridiculous amount of money already. The idea that they need more money to make a frigging effort is offensive.
How about each side chooses a charity and the money goes to the charity. Maybe they can be shamed into playing right?
Or better yet, fans vote on all-star players, right? Let the fans vote out players who they feel did not play with effort and disqualifying the offending players from playing the following year. Let's see if Luka would dare attempt a 3 from the back court just for fun.

None of these guys will risk injury to support a charity. But given a possible payout of, say, half-a-mil., they might. I really don't understand why they don't play D the way they might in a pick-up game (I DO understand why no NFL player is going to do that). It's probably as dangerous to do the high-flying slam dunks as it would be to play perfunctory D.

What do you do about the height differential of players, especially in the 1 on 1 part?

Yeah I did that myself. It's not perfect, but it allows for three man groups of east vs west, and then individuals. It rewards scoring the most points eventually, and everyone has monetary incentive to go as far as they can. I don't know about the number of minutes. Definitely needs to be shorter so you can fit a lot of games in a single day. I don't like USA vs non USA. I'd rather everyone be treated as a USA player.

Or just let it be that way?
I think 7 minutes is a good number. 15 games * 7 minutes is 105 minutes.
It probably gets expanded to 2.5 hours with intros and the time needed to switch between games.

USA vs non USA seems like something that might work initially, but would probably only be a short term fix. After a couple years they'd go back to fuckin around. Plus the 2 worst offenders are the non USA guys Jokic and Luka. They're historically awful in all star games.

But, I'll say that maybe it's because the players don't want to play with his skillset. He's rarely involved in passing plays, unless it's a broken play. Maybe if the basketball was more normal, he would be more engaged. A few years ago, he was picked as the last starter, when they did the captains thing.
